Does a small UK employer need an employee handbook?

A single handbook is not generally a universal legal requirement, but employers need clear procedures and must provide certain employment information.

A single document called an employee handbook is not generally compulsory for every UK employer. However, employers must provide required employment particulars and need clear, accessible procedures for matters such as discipline and grievances. Other policies may be necessary because of the employer's size, sector and risks.

A handbook helps keep rules, reporting routes and management processes in one place. It should reflect how the organisation actually operates, identify which policies are contractual, and be reviewed when the law or business changes.

This is general information, not legal advice. Your required policies depend on your workforce, activities and regulatory obligations.
