Day-to-day operating brief
What Academic Librarian (University) work looks like in practice
An Academic Librarian supports students, researchers and teaching staff in selected disciplines. Terms should cover subject liaison, collection development, database licences, reading lists, information-literacy teaching, research data or open-access support, accessibility, budgets and enquiry services. The librarian helps users discover and evaluate sources but should not complete assessed research for them, breach supplier licences or imply that database coverage makes a search exhaustive. Teaching materials should be refreshed when database interfaces, citation conventions or course assessments change. Enquiry statistics should not expose the research interests of identifiable staff or students; aggregate service evaluation can usually demonstrate demand without publishing the subject of a confidential literature search. Reading-list reviews should flag inaccessible editions, broken links, insufficient licences and unnecessarily costly texts before module launch.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
