Day-to-day operating brief
What Art Librarian (Visual materials) work looks like in practice
An Art Librarian manages image collections, exhibition catalogues, artists' books, slides, ephemera or digital visual resources. Terms should cover descriptive metadata, colour and format information, copyright and reproduction requests, fragile handling, digitisation, exhibition loans, teaching support and acquisition. The librarian should distinguish ownership of an object from permission to reproduce its image and should not flatten culturally sensitive or disputed attribution into an unqualified catalogue statement. Image metadata should distinguish creator, depicted subject, rights holder, photographer and source institution rather than collapse them into one author field. For slide or colour-reference collections, capture and display profiles should be documented so a visual difference is not automatically described as deterioration of the original artwork. Exhibition requests should reconcile object condition, mount, light exposure, security, insurance and courier responsibility.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
