What Attendance Officer work looks like in practice
A School Attendance Officer investigates absence patterns, contacts families and coordinates support intended to improve a pupil's access to education. Terms should cover register checks, case allocation, home visits, confidential family information, school and local-authority liaison, safeguarding, evidence standards and the boundary between supportive contact and formal enforcement decisions. Attendance patterns can reflect transport, health, bullying, unmet SEND, family instability or inaccurate registration, and the case record should keep those possibilities distinct. Targets must not reward rapid closure at the expense of listening to the pupil or testing whether agreed school support was actually provided. Review dates need a named owner and evidence of what changed. Weekly review should reconcile late marks, authorised absence, unexplained sessions and timetable changes before calculating improvement. If a pupil moves between schools or alternative provision, responsibility for live enquiries and transfer of the attendance chronology must be agreed explicitly.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
