What NVQ Assessor (National Vocational Qualification) work looks like in practice
A Hair and Beauty NVQ Assessor observes learners, reviews portfolios and makes decisions against an approved occupational standard. Assessment can occur in colleges, salons or workplaces and may involve live clients or models, commercially timed services and electronic evidence. Terms should define qualification units, assessor approval, caseload, travel, observation planning, authenticity, feedback, reassessment, appeals, standardisation and learner confidentiality. Attendance or employer pressure must never substitute for demonstrated competence. Observation plans should identify which criteria can be seen during a genuine service and which need questions or other evidence. Commercial salon activity must not pressure a model into a treatment or allow hidden assessor intervention to appear as learner competence. Remote evidence needs identity, date and context checks equivalent to workplace observation. Edited clips may support a decision but should not conceal sequencing, consultation or hygiene steps that the standard expects the assessor to judge. Reasonable assessment adjustments should change access to evidence, not the occupational competence standard, and should be recorded consistently for quality review.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
