Day-to-day operating brief
What Field Service Engineer work looks like in practice
An IT Field Service Engineer installs, diagnoses and repairs hardware or network equipment at customer locations. The role combines technical work with driving, lone working, site induction, parts custody and access to customer systems. Terms should define territory, travel time, vehicle, call-outs, tools, spares, remote instructions, customer sign-off, data handling and authority to stop unsafe or out-of-scope work. Arrival evidence should record device identity and initial condition before covers or components are removed. This protects both customer and engineer where previous damage, missing seals or an incorrect asset was supplied for service. Site departure checks should confirm service restoration, customer contact, packaging and any temporary workaround. A signed job sheet should not imply permanent repair when a loan component or follow-up visit remains necessary. Photographs taken at customer sites should exclude unrelated screens, papers and people, then remain inside the approved service-record system rather than a personal device gallery.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
