Responsibilities reflected in the contract

A realistic working scenario

On a production shift the Design Engineer inspects a suspect assembly, records test results in the equipment, quality and maintenance records, isolates the asset if unsafe, raises a quality hold in the production planning system and notifies the production or operations manager and quality team for defect close-out and remedial design or parts authorisation.

Outputs to agree

• Inspection and test record entries in equipment, quality and maintenance records for each checked asset.
• Isolation and safe-system confirmation for any asset removed from service, noted in the maintenance log.
• Defect close-out report recording root cause, remedial design actions, parts used and approval references.
• Quality hold request or release entered into the production planning system with supporting test data.
• Parts requisition or asset change request submitted to warehouse and engineering with traceability details.

Records and evidence

• Equipment, quality and maintenance records with timestamped inspection/test data.
• Production planning system entries for quality holds, releases and resource allocations.
• Isolation certificates or lockout-tagout records for assets taken out of service.
• Defect close-out forms showing corrective action, approver and completion date.
• Stock and traceability logs for parts used in repairs or design changes.
• Work records.

Reporting relationship

Typically reports to Line Manager or Department Manager. Confirm the employer's actual reporting structure in the builder.

Authority and escalation

• The Design Engineer may isolate equipment, place quality holds in the production planning system and raise parts requisitions. They may approve routine inspection records and defect reports but must escalate safety-critical isolations, unresolved defects, production-release exceptions and traceability failures to the production or operations manager and the quality lead for approval or further action.
• Obtain approval before committing expenditure, changing contractual commitments or making regulated or staffing decisions outside the assigned role.
