Day-to-day operating brief
What Janitor work looks like in practice
A Janitor maintains the day-to-day cleanliness and usability of shared premises, toilets, entrances and service areas. The role may replenish consumables, handle ordinary waste, undertake basic visual checks and open or secure designated areas, but it does not automatically include skilled repairs or full premises management. Terms should define the building, shift, cleaning standard, public contact, keys, alarms, waste streams, products, equipment, bodily-fluid or sharps exclusions, lone work and defect reporting. Routine rounds should identify which spaces were inaccessible and why, preventing an unchecked area from appearing complete. Consumable replenishment needs minimum levels and a timely request route, especially where shortages affect hygiene or accessibility. Waste should remain within the defined streams; unknown liquids, sharps or electrical items require specialist handling. If an alarm, door or fixture behaves abnormally, the janitor records the condition and secures the immediate area without presenting a visual check as a repair.
