Responsibilities reflected in the contract

• Assemble reinforcement cages and prefabricated sections to approved drawings.
• Check bar, coupler, splice and fabrication references before connection.
• Maintain temporary stability throughout assembly, lifting and positioning.
• Coordinate craned cages using authorised lifting and signalling arrangements.
• Verify cover spacers, splice locations, cage bracing and projecting-bar protection before handover.
• Measure and record alignment, connections and nonconformances.
• Prepare completed assemblies for the required engineering inspection.

A realistic working scenario

A prefabricated column cage arrives with couplers set at a different level from the assembly drawing. The steelfixer secures the cage, records measurements and waits for the engineer's disposition rather than forcing alignment during the lift.

Reporting relationship

Typically reports to Line Manager or Department Manager. Confirm the employer's actual reporting structure in the builder.

Authority and escalation

• The steelfixer may assemble and connect approved reinforcement systems. Coupler changes, forced alignment, lifting-point alteration and temporary-support removal require the responsible engineer or lifting/site authority.
• Obtain approval before committing expenditure, changing contractual commitments or making regulated or staffing decisions outside the assigned role.
