Day-to-day operating brief
What Business Analyst work looks like in practice
A Business Analyst investigates problems, maps processes and translates stakeholder needs into requirements, options and acceptance criteria. The role may cross departments and client organisations, exposing commercial, employee and customer information. Terms should define projects, locations, workshop authority, documentation ownership, data access, decision boundaries, travel and responsibility for maintaining traceability when scope changes. Traceability should connect each accepted requirement to its originating need, decision owner and test evidence. This prevents a polished specification from surviving after the business problem, regulation or operational constraint that justified it has changed. Workshop outputs should separate participant statements, analyst interpretation and approved decisions. That distinction prevents an early suggestion from becoming a mandatory requirement merely because it appeared in circulated notes. Benefits measures need a baseline, data owner and observation date, allowing the organisation to test whether an implemented process actually solved the original operational problem.
