Day-to-day operating brief
What Learning Assistant (Schools workshops) work looks like in practice
A Museum Learning Assistant delivers or supports workshops for schools and young people using galleries, replicas and sometimes collection objects. Terms should cover lesson plans, group size, teacher responsibility, safeguarding, consent, behaviour, access needs, object handling, resources, travel and evaluation. The assistant should not take sole responsibility for pupils outside the agreed model, photograph children informally or allow handling of unapproved objects. Workshop handover should identify adaptations, allergies relevant to materials, objects counted out and any behaviour or welfare action requiring authorised follow-up. Evaluation comments from children should not be linked publicly to full names or images merely because the school supplied a general event permission. Before a session, the assistant may need to count handling objects, check allergies or access notes supplied by the organiser and prepare transitions between activities. Afterwards, every loan item should be reconciled before the group departs.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
