Day-to-day operating brief
What Science Curator (Industry) work looks like in practice
A Science and Industry Curator researches instruments, machinery, prototypes and technical archives. Terms should address acquisition evidence, operating history, hazardous substances, stored energy, demonstrations, specialist handling, patents, manufacturer records and exhibition interpretation. The curator must distinguish an object's documented function from later recollection and must not energise, dismantle or sample equipment outside an approved technical and conservation plan. Technical cataloguing should preserve model numbers, calibration marks, modifications and links between an instrument and its supporting notebooks or manuals. Where a machine is displayed in motion, the operating file should identify competent operators, exclusion distances, pre-start checks and the conservation reason for permitting use. Deaccession or component disposal proposals should preserve the relationship between assemblies, spares and technical documentation. Duplicate-looking parts may demonstrate manufacturing change and should not be rationalised without specialist assessment.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
