Day-to-day operating brief
What Actuary work looks like in practice
An Actuary uses statistical and financial models to assess uncertain future liabilities, pricing, capital or pension outcomes. The role handles sensitive policyholder or member data and produces work that may support regulated decisions. Terms should define practice area, professional membership, qualification study, model ownership, assumption approval, peer review, sign-off limits, CPD, conflicts and publication. Targets must not distort independent judgement. Model-change records should separate code defects, methodology changes and refreshed experience assumptions because each affects comparability differently. Independent validation needs access to source data, documentation and limitations. Scenario outputs should explain interactions rather than encourage readers to add isolated stresses that were never designed to combine. Experience investigations should reconcile exposure and claims or member movements before drawing trend conclusions. Apparent improvement can result from missing late events, changed portfolio mix or a revised data extract rather than genuine risk reduction.
