Day-to-day operating brief
What Legal Secretary work looks like in practice
A Legal Secretary supports solicitors or legal teams by preparing documents, managing diaries, maintaining matter files, arranging meetings and communicating with clients, courts and other professionals. The role handles legally privileged and highly confidential material, but does not provide independent legal advice. Terms should define practice areas, supported fee earners, office or hybrid arrangements, document systems, court and transaction deadlines, dictation, time recording, client verification tasks, undertakings, file release and supervision. Deadline entries should identify the source, responsible lawyer, action and reminder structure rather than use an unexplained date alone. Document production requires careful treatment of tracked changes, hidden comments, metadata and signature versions before external issue. A secretary may relay approved information but must not soften, expand or interpret legal advice. Matter transfers should reconcile original documents, client money references, counsel papers and outstanding undertakings with the supervising lawyer.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
