Day-to-day operating brief
What DT Technician work looks like in practice
A School DT Technician prepares materials, tools and machinery for design and technology teaching and helps maintain a safe workshop. Terms should identify subject areas, machine competence, teacher instructions, pupil supervision boundaries, extraction, guards, hand tools, chemicals, stock, maintenance, contractor repairs, waste and the authority to isolate defective equipment before a lesson. Lesson preparation should state quantities, dimensions and the particular machines or processes authorised for the class, avoiding hurried cutting once pupils arrive. Offcuts and partially completed work need secure identification so they are not reused in an unsuitable project. Maintenance records should separate routine technician care from work reserved for specialist engineers. Materials issued to pupils should be appropriate for the planned process and free from hidden fixings, contamination or unstable edges. Demonstration setups need teacher approval and a clear dismantling plan, particularly when heat, pressure, rotating parts or stored energy remain after the lesson.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
