Day-to-day operating brief
What Legal PA (Partner) work looks like in practice
A Legal PA to a Partner coordinates a demanding diary, meetings, travel, correspondence, document workflows, billing tasks and team communication. Terms should cover matter access, priorities, email delegation, expenses, confidential strategy, court or transaction dates, remote work and cover. The PA may act as a communication gatekeeper but should not provide legal advice, approve substantive documents, commit the partner professionally or use broad mailbox access for matters unrelated to assigned work. Delegated mailbox work should use agreed categories for urgent, confidential-personal and ordinary matter traffic, preserving messages the partner must review personally. When arranging multi-party meetings, the PA should check conflicts and attendee authority before circulating privileged papers to a convenient but unverified distribution list. Recorded telephone messages should distinguish an actual deadline from a caller's requested response time. Court bundles, passports and signed originals should travel by an approved tracked method. Cover notes should flag undertakings, limitation dates and promised client responses explicitly.
