Day-to-day operating brief
What On-Call Librarian (Casual) work looks like in practice
An On-Call Librarian provides short-notice cover across branches, events or specialist services. Terms should accurately state casual or worker status, offer and acceptance of shifts, cancellation, travel, minimum competence, system access, keyholding, cash limits, lone working and emergency responsibility. Flexibility should not mean unbriefed deployment into unfamiliar safeguarding, building or management duties, and declined availability should be handled consistently with the actual contractual arrangement. Shift offers should name branch, hours, expected responsibility and any exceptional event before acceptance. A concise local pack should cover alarms, evacuation, safeguarding, cash and unavailable services, preventing casual staff from discovering critical procedures only after a visitor incident or building failure occurs. The contract should clarify whether availability is requested or guaranteed, how shifts are offered and the point at which acceptance becomes binding. Access permissions must match the duties of each booked shift rather than remain permanently elevated between engagements.
