Day-to-day operating brief
What Sunday Librarian (Weekend worker) work looks like in practice
A Sunday Librarian leads or supports branch service when staffing and external support may be reduced. Terms should cover weekend hours, premiums, keys, opening and closing, cash, volunteers, building alarms, public computers, events, safeguarding, lone work and weekday handover. The role should not be expected to resolve every specialist enquiry or facilities failure without available escalation, and reduced staffing must not justify unsafe occupancy or missed welfare checks. Weekend opening checks should include heating, accessible entrances, public toilets, network status and any contractor activity not shown on the normal diary. If weekday specialists are unavailable, the librarian should record a clear referral and expected response rather than improvising answers solely to close the enquiry before Sunday lock-up. Weekend handover notes should identify unresolved building, borrower or staffing matters for the weekday team, while urgent incidents follow the named escalation route rather than waiting for the next normal opening day. Cash, keys and lone-working devices should be reconciled at closure, with any variance recorded before responsibility passes to another shift. Alarm setting and final occupancy checks also need an accountable sequence.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
