Day-to-day operating brief
What Post Room Clerk work looks like in practice
A Post Room Clerk runs the practical flow of incoming and outgoing business mail, courier consignments and internal rounds. Unlike a high-volume sorter, the clerk may operate franking systems, book carriers, scan correspondence and liaise directly with departments about tracked or misdirected items. Terms should define location, rounds, opening rules, scanning, data, weights, equipment, carrier accounts, valuables, suspicious packages, proof and end-of-day cut-offs. Carrier labels should be checked against the physical parcel, service level and destination before collection, with cancelled labels controlled so they cannot be reused. Scanned correspondence must be complete, legible and linked to the correct department record. When postal charges or courier surcharges recur, the clerk should report evidence and options rather than quietly selecting slower services that may miss business deadlines.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
