Day-to-day operating brief
What Courier work looks like in practice
A Courier collects and delivers documents, parcels or equipment across an assigned area using a company or authorised vehicle. The role handles addresses, signatures and potentially sensitive or valuable consignments while working alone to route deadlines. Terms should define territory, hours, vehicle, driving checks, scanning, custody, proof of delivery, failed attempts, cash if any, parking, expenses and action for damage, loss or unsafe recipients. Each consignment should move through recorded collection, custody and delivery events, with exceptions linked to the correct parcel rather than noted only at route level. A signature proves receipt by a person but not necessarily an authorised recipient, so restricted items need additional verification. Drivers should not conceal damage to protect delivery targets. Route changes, vehicle defects and severe weather require realistic replanning and timely customer updates through dispatch. Age-restricted, identity-sensitive or high-value deliveries require the specified recipient evidence and cannot be diverted through ordinary neighbour options. Vehicle loading should protect both parcel integrity and safe weight distribution, with depot support used when consignments are unsuitable.
