Day-to-day operating brief
What Waste Management Officer work looks like in practice
A Waste Management Officer coordinates organisational waste streams, collection contractors, storage areas, records and reduction initiatives across one or more sites. The role may inspect operations and advise colleagues but specialist classification and legal sign-off should remain with competent authorised people where required. Terms should define waste categories, sites, travel, contractor and budget authority, transfer documentation, audits, data, incidents, training and environmental reporting. Contractor reviews should reconcile collection records, weights, destinations and invoices, investigating unexplained changes rather than relying on sustainability statements alone. New waste streams require space, signage, training and contamination controls before targets are announced. Environmental reports should define boundaries and conversion methods. Confidential, electrical, food, clinical or hazardous materials need their own authorised route and must not be blended to simplify headline recycling performance.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
