Day-to-day operating brief
What Crossing Patrol Officer work looks like in practice
A School Crossing Patrol Officer helps children and accompanying adults cross at an approved location during defined school times. The contract should identify the crossing, duty periods, uniform and sign, visibility, weather arrangements, road conditions, safe positioning, absence cover, incidents, aggressive drivers, contact with children and the boundary with police traffic powers. The officer's safe stopping position depends on visibility, road layout, parked vehicles and the behaviour of approaching traffic at that moment. Familiarity with the site does not make a new obstruction harmless. The employer should provide a rapid reporting route when road works, damaged signs or repeated dangerous driving alter the original crossing assessment. Duty logs should capture an abandoned vehicle, obscured approach, failed street lighting or changed traffic control that affects future sessions. The patrol should not be assessed by the number of people crossed where safe waiting or cancellation was the responsible outcome.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
