Day-to-day operating brief
What Film Librarian (Media cataloguer) work looks like in practice
A Film Librarian manages moving-image collections across physical reels, tapes and digital files. Terms should cover title and production credits, versions, durations, frame rates, carriers, codecs, subtitles, rights, condition, storage, viewing copies, loans and digitisation. The cataloguer should not merge distinct cuts, treat a transcoded access copy as the preservation master or provide footage where rights and donor restrictions remain unclear. Inspection records should identify leader, shrinkage, vinegar odour, mould, sticky playback or other carrier-specific concerns before equipment use. When creating viewing files, timecodes, aspect ratio, soundtrack and subtitles should be checked against the source so access copies do not silently change the work's sequence or presentation. Rights notes should distinguish preservation copying, onsite access, educational use and public exhibition rather than recording a single ambiguous status. Donor restrictions and music rights may differ from ownership of the physical reel.
