Day-to-day operating brief
What Trainee Surveyor work looks like in practice
A Trainee Surveyor supports inspections, measurements, research and draft reporting while developing professional competence. Terms should define the training pathway, supervisor, study support, site travel, equipment, lone-working limits, draft status, client contact and sign-off. The trainee should not present preliminary observations as a professional conclusion, inspect hazardous areas outside training or issue reports without the responsible surveyor's review. Inspection notes should be contemporaneous and show where a measurement, photograph or statement came from, enabling the supervisor to test the draft conclusion. Training assignments should gradually extend complexity while naming the review required, instead of using the trainee's job title as blanket authority for unfamiliar property types. Professional-development logs should connect each experience to feedback and a future competence action. Client-facing attendance does not itself authorise the trainee to answer questions reserved for the supervising surveyor.
