Day-to-day operating brief
What Switchboard Operator work looks like in practice
A Switchboard Operator answers and routes calls through a central telephone system, maintains directories, takes messages and applies emergency or priority-call procedures. Unlike a reception role, the work may be remote from visitors and focused on call flow across many departments or sites. Terms should define hours, volumes, scripts, directory permissions, caller information, recording, abusive calls, emergency codes, outages, accessibility and shift handover. Messages should repeat back names, numbers, organisation and urgency, marking uncertainty instead of silently normalising unfamiliar terms. Directory searches must not expose hidden teams or employees to unauthorised callers. During high volume, queue announcements and callback options should follow current service instructions. An operator transferring a vulnerable or distressed caller should confirm the receiving route rather than abandoning the call into an unattended extension.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
