Day-to-day operating brief
What Switchboard Supervisor work looks like in practice
A Switchboard Supervisor manages operators, rotas, call standards, directory controls and escalation for a central telephone service. The role reviews service levels and supports complex or emergency calls while coordinating outages with technical teams. Terms should define sites, operating hours, staffing authority, monitoring, scripts, directory governance, emergency tests, incident command, complaints, accessibility and the boundary between coaching and formal discipline. Quality review should sample accuracy, privacy and caller experience rather than reward short handling time alone. Directory releases need an effective date and withdrawal of superseded copies across consoles. Continuity exercises should test carrier failure, platform loss and unavailable departments, recording actual gaps. Workforce reports must distinguish absence, training, unusual call demand and system delay so coaching is not applied to infrastructure problems.
Individually written and reviewed against the maintained role record.
