Day-to-day operating brief
What Press Officer (Relations) work looks like in practice
A Press Officer represents an organisation's communications function, handling journalist enquiries, preparing statements, briefing spokespeople and coordinating corrections or announcements. Unlike an agency PR executive serving multiple accounts, the role works from inside one organisation and may hold direct operational knowledge and crisis duties. Terms should define subject remit, on-call expectations, approval chain, confidential information, embargoes, recordings, media monitoring, public bodies where relevant, social coordination and emergency response. An enquiry log should record exact questions, deadline, outlet, response owner and published outcome, enabling consistent answers across staff. Briefing documents must identify confirmed fact, approved context and material not for release. Spokesperson preparation should cover difficult questions without scripting misleading avoidance. After an incident, the press office reconciles every public statement and correction with operational records so the enduring account is accurate. Media monitoring should distinguish quotation, paraphrase and commentary, enabling proportionate correction decisions instead of treating every unfavourable interpretation as a factual error.
